This month we are concentrating on the UN’s Goal 12 — Responsible Consumption and Production
Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
The UK generated 222.2 million tonnes of total waste in 2018!!
- Waste from households in 2020 was over 27 million tonnes of waste, of which 44.4% was recycled. England recycles about 44% whereas Wales are thrashing us with 56.5%.
- In the UK only about 10% of our plastic gets recycled, even if it is put in the recycling bin.
- 1 million plastic drinking bottles are purchased every minute.
- 5 trillion single use plastic bags are thrown away each year.
- Electronic waste continues to grow, made worse by things such as cryptocurrency.
Where is all of this waste going and what happens when we run out of resources?
Blueberry Financial are helping by:
We have reduced our paper use, using password protected emails and adobe sign rather than paper forms.
We shred all sensitive documents and the shredded paper is recycled.
We recycle all of our used paper.
We buy recycled printer paper rather than bleached white new paper.
Madeleine uses a Remarkable tablet rather than taking notes on paper.
Madeleine drinks Coke out of aluminium cans that we recycle rather than plastic bottles—I know, but I love Coke!!
We regularly suggest ways for our clients to reduce waste via our newsletters, ie using washable cotton pads and metal toothpaste tubes rather than plastic.
We reuse our window displays by carefully storing them for subsequent years.
What other ideas can we implement?
