Fun Retirement: Numbers 4 – 6

Are you ready for the next 3 things to do in retirement?

Number 4

Genealogy – Find out about your family tree

This is something that my Dad has really enjoyed over the past few years and we can now go back a few hundred years !! My great great grandmother was the 8th daughter of the Duke of Hamilton – so we are royalty. Well, not at all, but that is our only claim to fame in that regard.

Some people care where they came from and want to go back as far as they can and use websites such as ancestry.co.uk. They could be just interested in this as they are nosy about their family and heritage, whereas others may be interested because they were adopted and want to find a sense of self.

How about sending off your blood and finding out where your blood comes from? Are you a pure blood or a mix from all over the world? Spoiler alert: you are from all over the world!!

Number 5

Record Life

So much is going on around us; do we stop, pause, and take a look at it? Do we record it to remind ourselves at a later date or show others, such as family members? Kids are amazed at the smallest things as they haven’t seen it before, whereas as adults we get a bit blasé about things that we have seen millions of times. When was the last time that you really looked at a flower and how stunning and complex it is? When did you look back at your family and how beautiful their smiles were the last time you got together?

Photographs can record that moment in time so you can reappreciate it later or show it to others. My kids love looking at their baby photo albums, and mine.

Do not keep the photos just in frames, put them into scrap books or photo albums, rather than cluttering up your house with millions of them.

If you have been photographing scenery then why not get one enlarged for your wall as artwork?

Number 6

Volunteer

Many of our clients would like to volunteer when they are retired, if they are not already. A way of giving back to the community and helping other people.

There are so many different things that you can do, whether it is to fill your time up when you are retired, or just to add to your sense of giving.

There are so many charities who would love your help, from traditional tin rattling, to fund raising, to working in a soup kitchen. Just before lockdown, my sister started giving lifts to elderly people in her village if they needed to go to the doctors or dentist. Her one year old son came with her and it was fun for all involved. So you do not have to wait until you are older.

Please let me know what you get up to as I would love to hear from you
