Grandparents are Inspirational – How About You?

Posted on:

According to a recent survey of 18 – 39 year olds, two thirds of them think that:

Grandparents are more inspirational than celebrities

Well thank goodness for that!!

Watching Joey Essex and Katie Price on Celebrity SAS on Channel 4 is anything but inspirational!!

Grandparents have lived through many things depending on how old they are: WWII, rationing, the swinging 60s, previous economic crises, the drug fuelled 70s and disco in the 80s, Margaret Thatcher and Poll Tax, the Falklands War, the fun of the Tech Bubble and Brexit, to name but a few. How can they not be interesting people to talk to for our younger generations?

A fifth of young people surveyed loved the fact that older people can say what they want, when they want, without worrying about the consequences.

My Mum has always said that when she gets old, she is going to dye her hair purple!! I got in there first with purple streaks in my hair a few years back, so you do not have to wait. Do things now that make you smile.

Your age is just a number and does not have to hold you back

  • The Queen is 94 and look at how amazing she is
  • Thomas Edison invented the telephone when he was 84!!
  • Picasso was still producing art in his 90s
  • Look at our very own Dame Judi Dench – Vogue cover star at the age of 85. Not only that, she was M in James Bond!!
  • And who does not know and love Sir David Attenborough?

A national treasure and a man concerned about the future of our planet. He is hoping that this lockdown will make us rethink the way that we live and work. Do we really need to pack ourselves onto trains and buses like sardines to get to work, or can we continue more like we are and work from home, and stop further pollution of our planet by not going on foreign holidays.

Bernice Bates is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest certified yogi on Earth!! On 2nd September 2011 she was awarded this at the age of 91. Her yoga class mantra is “I can’t do that … YET!”

Her philosophy is: “As long as you’re alive, it’s never too late to love your body”

Nola Ochs took her first college course in 1930 but didn’t complete her degree until 2007 at the age of 95, becoming America’s oldest college graduate. She then decided to get her master’s degree in liberal studies aged 98!!

“I would like, in the long run, to encourage people to keep on learning. Our education is never complete.”

Ron Cunningham, was an escapologist and his last stunt he did at the age of 90, escaping out of handcuffs with both arms on fire!!
